Position Summary

Provide anesthesia services for surgery, obstetrics, and ancillary services.  Provide airway management services as needed hospital-wide. Secures, prepares and provides basic safety check on all equipment, monitors, supplies and drugs used for the administration of anesthesia. Able to demonstrate the ability to advance evidence based practice by utilizing standards, guidelines and pathways for care delivery.  Incorporates data and information into practice to continually improve care and practice so that patient outcomes are enhanced.

Registered Nurse Anesthetist Responsibilities:
  • Assesses the patient prior to the anesthetic and identifies expected anesthetic outcomes.
  • Involves the patient, family and other health team members in gathering data
  • Analyzes data to identify needs and potential risks
  • Identifies outcomes that are age appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic and attainable 
Registered Nurse Anesthetist Assessment Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of developmental stages and age appropriate outcomes and interventions
  • Knowledge of cultural differences and culturally appropriate outcomes and interventions
  • Develops an individualized anesthesia care plan
  • Collaborates with the Anesthesiologist in planning anesthetic
  • Involves patient, family and other health team members appropriately
  • Develops plan based on medical condition, surgical procedure, age, social and cultural conditions 
  • Knowledge of developmental stages and age appropriate outcomes and interventions
  • Knowledge of cultural differences and culturally appropriate outcomes and interventions
  • Care planning skills
  • Administers/induces anesthesia based on the plan of care
  • Administers pharmacological agents based on individual patient need
  • Establishes and maintains patient airway
  • Makes appropriate modifications to changing anesthetic clinical situations 
  • Maintains adequate ventilation throughout anesthetic
  • Recognizes and treats cardiac arrhythmias
  • Maintains proper fluid, electrolyte and acid-based balance
  • Identifies and determines need for blood component therapy
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and establishes priorities when problems develop 
  • Evaluate patient response during emergence and initiates supportive or pharmacological treatment to ensure adequate recovery
  • Informs supervising Anesthesiologist appropriately about problems or changes in patient’s status
  • Uses NaviCare as a means to communicate
  • Maintains accurate, legible and complete documentation of anesthetic records and billing forms 
Registered Nurse Anesthetist Qualifications:
  • Minnesota RN License and AANA certification or Board eligible
  • ACLS and BCLS
  • PALS is required at time of hire or within 3 months of hire unless current with NALS certification.
